REYNOLDS MARKET - BAKER

Coming Soon

The Reynolds Supermarket Stores were founded by Frank T. Reynolds of Glendive and his partner, John Marman of Sidney.  They had opened their first store in Glendive in 1925 and proceeded to open nine more grocery stores in the ensuing years.  These stores were located in Sidney, Wibaux, Circle, Terry, Beach, Miles City, Glasgow, Watford City, ND, and Baker.

Reynolds Supermarket in Baker was opened in November of 1963. The theme of the store at the time was “ The store that brought low prices to Baker”.

Leveling of the ground began in August 1961 and Joey Steffes built the original building. Pat Kilworth managed the store for five years but then left to open his own store in Sheridan, WY.. At this time, the Reynolds Company asked Clarence Schell, who owned and operated a locker plant if he would manage the store. Clarence had also worked at the Baker Super Value from 1954 until he obtained the locker plant. It was a difficult decision for him because his locker plant was pretty successful but he accepted the offer and managed the store from 1968 until 1996. The store was much smaller than it is now when Clarence first started managing it.  The building at the time included two other small shops, a sewing shop and a scratch bakery located where the produce and bakery departments are now located.  In the 1970’s the building was expanded on both ends and the parking lot was paved with cement.  Prior to this the parking lot was nothing but a mud hole that they tried to fix by hauling in gravel but it turned to mush with a lot of sand in it and made an awful mess in the store.  So this was a great improvement.  When the cement started breaking up an overlay of asphalt was laid.  A new front-end entrance was built and a bakery was added in the 1980’s.

When Clarence purchased the property in 1975, he added other buildings to the Lake city Shopping Center as well.  It is now home to Hardware Hank, Runnings Fleet and Farm, Sakelaris’ Kitchen, Precision Auto Parts, Kuts 4 All, Serenities Massage, Get' Im Here, and a Laundromat.

When Clarence retired in 1996, Ken Schell, Clarence’s oldest son became manager.  He started working at Reynolds in 1971 as a box boy and is the manager at this time.  An Express Lane/Courtesy Counter was added in 2002.  In 2005 the frozen food department was expanded considerably and in 2006 new produce cases were added.  This spring Reynolds will begin remodeling to accommodate a Deli Department.
